# Understand Heat Pump COP

###### By Kasper Kiis Jensen

Heat pump COP stands for Coefficient of Performance and is a ratio for the heating or cooling energy a heat pump can provide relative to the power it consumes. A higher COP is a measure of higher energy efficiency.

## How to Calcuate Heat Pump COP

The COP of a heat pump is in simple terms calculated as below:

$COP = \frac{|Q|}{W}$

Where Q is the usefull energy the heat pump has delivered and W is the eletrical energy consumption of the heat pump. In practice the means a heat pump with a COP=3 delivers 3 times the cooling or heating energy compared to what it consumes.

In practice measuring the COP of a heat pump is a little more advanced and is done in a laboratory. Here the heat pump for domestic hot water is simulated with a normal day’s use according to the standard EN 16147. Water is tapped from the heat pump at different rates and different intervals while continuous measurements are made and at the end the COP is calculated.
